The Monument Installation Process, Step by Step
This is a planning overview for families, not a construction specification or a guide to lifting a monument yourself. Foundation design, lifting methods and setting materials must be selected by the responsible installer for the memorial and site. The cemetery may require its own approved contractor or foundation service.
- Cemetery contact and permit verification. Confirm the plot details, permitted monument size and material, who may perform the work, and any application or inspection requirements. Request current fees directly from the cemetery; permit-assistance service charges are separate unless the quote expressly includes them.
- Site preparation. Review photos, dimensions, access and the condition of any existing foundation. The crew and cemetery determine whether new foundation work or another assessment is needed. There is no single foundation depth suitable for every cemetery.
- Foundation preparation and readiness. Follow the site’s approved foundation specifications. When new concrete is required, the responsible contractor must confirm readiness for loading based on the design, materials and conditions, rather than a universal number of hours.
- Monument setting and leveling. The installer plans equipment and access for the monument’s size and weight, then places and checks the memorial against the approved layout. Do not attempt to move, straighten or support a heavy stone yourself.
- Connections and finishing. The installer determines the appropriate connection and finishing method for the design. Adhesives and dowels are not interchangeable universal solutions; ask what method is included in the scope and why it is suitable.
- Photo documentation and confirmation. Photo confirmation documents the completed service. Ask which views will be provided and when they will be sent. Retain the quote, approval and completion photos for future care or questions.
How Long Does Monument Installation Take?
A booking date depends on cemetery approval, access, foundation readiness, the monument’s delivery and crew availability. Weather or a cemetery closure can change the plan. Manufacturing lead time for a new memorial is separate from installation scheduling. If an anniversary or ceremony matters, state that date when requesting a quote and ask which milestones must be completed before a date can be confirmed.
Installation Pricing and What to Check
The published installation planning ranges are $700–$1,100 for flat or bevel markers, $1,200–$2,200 for upright monuments, and $2,500–$4,000 for benches or larger sets. These are not fixed quotations for a particular cemetery. Ask whether freight, foundation work, cemetery fees, permits, access equipment and removal of an existing memorial are included. Can You Install a Monument Purchased Elsewhere?
Installation can be requested for a memorial bought from another supplier, subject to a review of its dimensions, condition and cemetery approval. Send the seller’s specifications, delivery arrangements and any cemetery paperwork. Keep product warranty terms from the seller separate from any written installation-service terms; do not assume that one covers the other.
After Installation
Keep completion photos and contact the service team if you notice movement, joint separation or damage. Do not push a leaning memorial or attempt a repair.
