Engraving & Add-ons across Virginia, coordinated from first call to final photo

Add new dates, names and details to an existing monument, or personalize a new one. Our engraving team works both on-site at the cemetery and in-shop, using laser and sandblast etching for inscriptions, portraits, medallions and even QR codes. Send close-up photos so the team can assess the existing lettering and agree a suitable approach.

Across Virginia, engraving & add-ons is delivered through our South network, so you get one clear point of contact and a crew coordinated to your cemetery — with nearby hubs in Florida, Oklahoma, South Carolina supporting scheduling across the region.

We work with monuments purchased from any retailer — not just our own family of brands — and every visit in Virginia is documented with photos so distant families can see the work was done correctly and respectfully.

  • A government medallion may be provided for eligible Veterans who served on or after April 6, 1917 and whose grave is marked with a privately purchased headstone or marker.

  • VA does not pay to affix that medallion to a privately purchased headstone in a non-national cemetery; it delivers the medallion to the applicant.

  • A government headstone or marker should not be altered. VA may replace it to change or add inscription details when the next of kin ask within six months of the original being provided.

Winchester National Cemetery

Monuments and memorials

Winchester National Cemetery contains 15 monuments, most commemorating units that fought in the battles of the Shenandoah Valley during the Civil War: -The marble 38th Massachusetts Volunteers Monument was erected in 1864. -The 14th New Hampshire Regiment Monument was erected by that state in 1868. -The granite 8th Vermont Volunteers Monument was erected in 1885 by Herbert E. Hill. -The granite 3rd Massachusetts Cavalry Monument was dedicated in 1888. -The Pennsylvania Monument is a large granite structure surmounted by a bronze figure.

History

Winchester National Cemetery was established on land appropriated for burials during the Civil War.

Although the land was used for burial purposes as early as 1862, the cemetery was not officially dedicated until April 8, 1866, and the land was not legally transferred to the U.S. government until December 1, 1870, when Jacob Baker was paid $1,500 for the 4.89-acre tract and the deed was signed and executed.

Winchester National Cemetery was the final resting place for Union soldiers who fought and died at the battles of Winchester, New Market, Front Royal, Snickers Gap, Harper's Ferry, Martinsburg, and Romney.

Physically, it was typical of first-generation national cemeteries built before 1870: the grounds were surrounded by a fence and thereafter a wall, a flagpole was centrally located, and a frame lodge followed by a masonry lodge served as an office and dwelling for the superintendent.

City Point National Cemetery

Monuments and memorials

The Army of the James Monument is a large, 20-foot high white marble memorial erected in memory of the dead of the Army of the James.

The monument was constructed under the direction of Major General B.F. Butler, commander of the Army of the James from April 1864 to January 1865.

History

City Point National Cemetery is located in the historical district of Hopewell, VA.

The cemetery received its name from the town City Point which was in Prince George County before being annexed by the City of Hopewell in 1923.

At the confluence of the James and Appomattox rivers, City Point was a vital transportation center for railroads such as the Norfolk and Petersburg Railroad, and was a well-established inland port on the James River and Kanawha Canal at the onset of the Civil War.

City Point's transportation advantages and proximity to Richmond, the longest-enduring capital of the Confederacy, led Union General Ulysses S. Grant to establish a supply depot for his army here.

What families say

Trusted by families and funeral homes across the country

“They handled everything with our mother’s monument — delivery, cemetery coordination, installation and photos afterward. We live in another state, so knowing it was set correctly and respectfully meant the world to us.”

Linda M.

Family, out-of-state

“The deep cleaning and leveling completely transformed the family plot. The before-and-after photos were incredible, and now the stone looks like it did when it was first installed. We’re very grateful for the care they showed.”

Emily R.

Family

“We added dates and a portrait to an existing monument through their engraving team. Everything matched perfectly and was done right at the cemetery. Communication was clear from start to finish.”
